The Saint Martin de Porres High School Lady Lions basketball team, in a thrilling game, secured a 43-41 victory over the First Baptist Christian School Sabres on Feb. 9, claiming the LEC Conference Championship.
The game was one of intense competition from start to finish, as the halftime score reflected the closely contested game with Saint Martin de Porres trailing narrowly at 18-19. The Lady Lions, led by top scorers Lyric Johnson and Kasandra Colon-Cintron, ignited a rally in the second half.
Johnson's outstanding performance saw her net 21 points, accompanied by 10 steals and 7 assists. Co-captain Colon-Cintron added a further 10 points to the scoreboard and came up crucial at the final moments. With Johnson fouling out and the game tied, Colon-Cintron held her nerve and sunk two crucial free throws, tipping the scales in favor of the Lady Lions with just a minute remaining.
"We did it for 11 all season and that's why we got that win. It was for her, it was payback from last year just for her!", Johnson said, honoring a teammate's legacy in her post-game statement.
This win appears as a demonstration of resilience for the Lady Lions, who have achieved a season record of 12-10. "The LEC 2024 Champs! It's a great feeling and Enieyla's spirit was with us and we came out on top," the coaches shared post-game.
The Lady Lions are now setting their sights on their next challenge as they prepare to face the Hearts for Jesus team on their home turf at Wilson come Feb. 12.
