From Shy to STNA: How Conisha ’26 Is Building Her Future in Healthcare

Conisha ‘26 didn’t always see herself working in healthcare, but through Saint Martin’s Corporate Work Study program, she discovered both a career path and a new level of confidence. Her journey from a shy student to State Tested Nursing Aide (STNA) is a powerful example of how Corporate Work Study experiences and industry credentials are opening doors for our students.

Conisha is currently able to apply her STNA training at her Corporate Work Study placement at Regina Health Center, located in Richfield, Ohio. From a young age, Conisha was exposed to the healthcare industry; her sister is a nurse, but she wasn’t convinced that it was the career she wanted to pursue after high school. That perspective changed when she learned about the STNA certification opportunity through Saint Martin’s Career Credentialing program. “I remember hearing about it during my junior year and thinking this could help me step outside my comfort zone,” Conisha recalls. While she describes herself as shy, she saw the program as a chance to build confidence and explore a new path for her future.

Conisha enrolled in the program, which requires both classroom and clinical experiences and she passed her state exam in January 2025. She now uses her STNA certification in her Corporate Work Study role at Regina Health Center. She directly supports patients by assisting with meals, taking vital signs, and creating a welcoming environment. “It brings me joy to see the difference I’m making in patients’ lives,” Conisha shares. Because of her certification, she is trusted with greater responsibility than other Student Associates and continues to grow professionally under the guidance of her supervisor and Director of Nursing, Corey Stansberry. “Mr. Corey has taught me that the healthcare field is extremely broad and full of opportunities,” she explains. Feeling like a valued member of the Regina Health Center team, Conisha brings confidence and professionalism to work every Thursday, knowing she is making a meaningful impact.

After Saint Martin, Conisha plans to attend Ålabama State University, where she will major in Forensic Science and continue exploring her passion for science with her desire to help others. Her experiences in the classroom and through Corporate Work Study have prepared her both academically and personally for this next chapter. “Because of Saint Martin, I’m ready for what’s next,” Conisha shares, reflecting on the confidence, skills, and sense of purpose she has gained along the way. With a strong foundation and a clear vision for her future, Conisha is excited to take the next step toward a career where she can make a lasting difference.
