Alumni Spotlight: William Jones '09

“And the 2009 Mr. Saint Martin Award goes to… William Jones!”

These are the words that Will recalls fondly from his high school graduation day after receiving the award for his hard work, accomplishments, and exemplifying the 5 pillars of Saint Martin: Work, Study, Serve, Lead, Pray. As a proud alumnus, William recalls how these pillars shaped him as a man and set him up for success in college and beyond.

After graduating from Saint Martin in 2009, Will began school at Notre Dame College in Cleveland. Although he was unsure what he wanted to study at first, William soon found his passion for Studio Art and graduated with his degree in 2014. Through ups and downs of undergraduate life, Will leaned on his Saint Martin college counselors to push him through the finish line. “I can say if it had not been for Saint Martin, I don’t think I would have gotten into college or have been as prepared as I was. It felt like my Saint Martin family helped me succeed and I am so thankful.”

Although art is Will’s passion, which he does on the side, his full time job is quite the opposite. As an Operations Specialist for Travelers Insurance, Will handles all the behind the scenes paperwork of accident claims such as ensuring bills get paid, providing the correct coverage, and communicating with vendors. Will hopes to one day change this and make art his full time job. He envisions himself having his art in luxury facilities, being more well-known for his artistry, and even teaching it.

No matter where he ends up on his journey, Will shares how his experiences at Saint Martin laid the foundation for his college and career success. Thanks to his Corporate Work Study jobs at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens and Fairview Hospital, Will learned customer service skills, office skills, and how to build relationships with coworkers, which he uses at his job today. His favorite Corporate Work Study memory was on his last day at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens when one of his coworkers gifted him with his first sketchbook that he held onto for a long time.

Will is thankful for all the opportunities that Saint Martin has given him including preparation, real world experience, relationships and resources. “Saint Martin was really a propeller. If I could thank the school for giving me one thing, it would be for always having someone in my corner… oh and my Mr. Saint Martin Award.”
