Alumni Spotlight: Tierra Jones-Benning '17

When Tierra Jones-Benning ’17 visited Radio One Cleveland on a field trip during her sophomore year of high school, she did not expect that, years later, she would be working in that very radio station. Now, as a Promotions Assistant at Radio One, Tierra is sharing incredible content with the city of Cleveland and acting as an enthusiastic force in an impactful industry.

Tierra credits her love for community and professional work ethic to Saint Martin and, in particular, the Corporate Work Study Program. When entering a competitive, ever-changing workforce, Tierra was prepared to reach her goals because of her real-world work experience in high school. Working downtown in a professional environment at a young age, taught her timeliness and workplace etiquette while also an understanding that she needed to rise to high expectations. She shares, “Although I was a teenager, in the workplace, I knew I was at the same level as my coworkers, or trying to get to the same level in the workplace, and must carry myself as such”. Following graduation from Saint Martin, Tierra maintained that same mindset and set her sights on a career in media production.

Following graduation from Saint Martin, Tierra attended Bowling Green State University to study media production and graduated with her degree in 2021. Instilled with passion for the media industry and a desire to make an impact on the community, Tierra put her networking skills from Saint Martin into action and began reaching out to radio stations, eager to put her talents into work. Upon reaching out to Radio One Cleveland and sharing her previous encounter with the station in high school, the director at Radio One shared that he remembered Tierra’s visit with Saint Martin. Her hard work, determination, passion and talents in the media industry landed Tierra the job with Radio One, where she works today.

Tierra shared that it is a surreal experience to walk the halls of Radio One as an employee, a place she once dreamed of working at in high school. She thanks Saint Martin, which she endearingly referred to as a Cleveland gem, for giving her the chance to be better and do better and for showing her the power of community, the driving force of inspiration of the media industry. In the future, Tierra hopes to become a producer and filmmaker, and share incredible stories with her community. Regardless of where her profession leads her, it is clear that Tierra will forever hold Saint Martin, CWSP, and the community of Cleveland close to her heart.
