Alumni Spotlight: Angel Caban '11

After moving to the United States from Puerto Rico in 2007, Angel Caban ‘11 was looking to maintain his high grades by attending a high school with rigorous academics. After taking the entrance exam days before the deadline and learning about the Corporate Work Study Program, Angel and his family knew Saint Martin was the perfect fit.

As a freshman, Angel was placed at the Cleveland Indians for his Corporate Work Study job, which eventually paved the way to his future career. His avid love for baseball and sports drove his excitement for his job as a high school student, but the work force ready skills and network connections he made is what he appreciates as an adult. “Because of the Corporate Work Study Program, I have everything I have today! I took advantage of the opportunity Saint Martin gave me. Through working in the finance department, setting up for games, filing documents, or collecting recycling, I was able to network with the right people to get to where I am today.”

Following Saint Martin, Angel attended Lourdes University in 2011 to play baseball. He then transferred to Cuyahoga Community College and earned his Associate’s Degree in 2015 before moving on to Cleveland State University to earn his BS in Health Sciences in 2016. Throughout college, Angel worked as a bat boy for the Cleveland Indians thanks to his CWSP job. As he was nearing college graduation, a contact that Angel met through the Cleveland Indians, introduced him to the Oatey company, where he began his career as a Customer Account Specialist in 2016.

Now 5 years later, Angel works as the International Sales Specialist for the Oatey Company. He deals with customers around the world, making sales calls, placing orders, accepting returns, and providing technical training for products. Once it is allowed post pandemic, he will begin traveling internationally to visit customers and close sales.

“I can’t thank Saint Martin enough for what they gave me. I am grateful for the education I received as well as the opportunity I was afforded as a 14 year old to work in a professional setting at the Cleveland Indians. The Corporate Work Study program is truly a win-win situation for both the student and the company because it fills a need within the organization while also providing life changing experiences to high school students.”
