SCHOOL NEWS
Business Brought to Life
School days, school days, dear old golden rule days. Reading, writing, and arithmetic may be part of a standard high school education, but at Saint Martin we take it one step further with a special elective class that empowers our students to embrace entrepreneurial and economic principles to run their own businesses.
Thanks to the coursework and classroom materials o ered through
the nationwide organization Youth Entrepreneurs (YE), this class uses card games, Monopoly, and other activities to learn about trading, the stock market, and the worth of certain goods and services. Once a semester, students create a business idea, price the cost of goods, write a business plan, and then actually start their own businesses. Teacher Chad Berry exclaims, “This class is giving students real-world skills that are beyond college readiness! Learning how to handle money and set something up that is yours and then doing an analysis of what you
have done so you can make something better is what real businesses do every day.” Once students create their business plans they receive microloans through Youth Entrepreneurs that help them to get their businesses up and running. Once they pay back their loan, they are able to keep any pro t that their business makes.
Seniors Jimmy Garmback
and Eriyon Sales have
seen a lot of success
with their business, Glam
Essentials. In their junior
year, they began selling
face and lip scrubs and
have expanded now to
include lip gloss, candles,
and other beauty
products. Although the
majority of students sell
mainly at school, Jimmy
and Eriyon have taken
their business outside the classroom to local farmers markets
and other events at 78th Street Studios. Jimmy says, “This class
has taught me that I would love to open my own business one
day and has helped me discover my major for college. I have
learned the di erent parts of business such as nance, cost of goods, marketing, and more which I am excited to continue learning about
in my college career.” Another successful business, Sorivera, run by seniors Nick Soria and Emilia Rivera, sells empanadas, rice, and pulled pork, and pro ted over $600 in one selling day!
Thanks to the Youth Entrepreneurs class, our students have been empowered to dream big and bring abstract ideas into reality, turning our Lions into entrepreneurs.
