The best part of Saint Martin de Porres High School is the community and all the people in it..."

Carlous, 12th grade
Chess Club is one of the most popular clubs at Saint Martin de Porres. Everyone is welcome. If you are a master, we will find someone against whom you can compete. If you get Chess confused with Checkers, we’ll teach you. Each year the STMdPHS Chess club hosts a school- wide chess tournament. The winner of the tournament is declared the Saint Martin de Porres Grand Master, and has her or his name engraved on a Silver Trophy that is handed down through the generations of Saint Martin de Porres. Let’s play chess!

The Creative Writing Club meets to create all kinds of written work and to discuss and share our writing. We also plan two school-wide readings during the year. One open mic night and one Poetry Slam. Writers also oversee the editing and publication of the literary magazine and plan a book signing party to coincide with the literary magazine’s release date.

Engineering Club members watch Junkyard Wars together and discuss the math, science and engineering principles involved. Then students compete in their own “wars”, utilizing their new design knowledge in a similar challenge.

The Film Club will make its debut soon and plans to produce movies, memoirs, interviews and news casts. Members will also attend film festivals and watch, critique, and study movies.

It’s Your Move is a group that promotes human rights and respect through learning about different kinds of people and trying to understand one another. Our meetings involve activities that generate lively discussions about racism, sexism, ageism and other means of discrimination. Our purpose is to examine our lives and the groups we are affiliated with for ways to be more inclusive of all our sisters and brothers in the human family. IYM is affiliated with the Northeast Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), a force for diversity awareness and inclusion in northeast Ohio.

The Paw Print, the student newspaper of St. Martin de Porres High School, assists in the building and strengthening of the community by reporting on the events of everyday school life. The staff makes a voluntary commitment of their time and energy to this endeavor. The staff aims to reflect the values of the St. Martin de Porres community and to represent the school well. In its reporting, the paper covers all segments of the school community — students, parents, faculty, administration, and friends. It does so through fair, thorough, and accurate coverage of school news.

The Photography Club is currently funded by a grant from MBNA, in which the students take pictures of the many school events, field trips, masses, and retreats. These pictures can be found in newspaper, yearbook, and various other school publications.

Praise Dance members praise God than through music and dance. Praise Dancers gather weekly to prepare dances to Gospel music that offer our thanksgiving to God. Praise Dancers perform at both Masses and prayer services, while the rest of the student body supports them through clapping and singing.

Real Talk is a group that meets bi-weekly to discuss issues that face teens: from drugs, to alcohol and especially sex. The faculty moderators believe that to be a Christian community of caring we must offer the support each student needs to succeed in not only their mental well being, but their emotional, physical and spiritual development as well. We come together to fulfill that mission of community. As 9th grade Physics teacher Kristen Wolfe puts it: “Our students are seeking someone to be a good example for them and to tell them that not having sex is okay. We need to be that someone.”

Student Advocates for Social Justice (SASJ) is a student group whose focus is to bring respect and dignity to all people through various events and activities that are both informational and exciting for students and encourage active involvement. In the past, SASJ has encouraged student involvement by hosting an open mic night for sweatshop awareness, organizing a penny war for Heifer International, participating in a march on Columbus against the death penalty, and raising funds for both a children’s shelter and Hurricane Katrina relief.

The Student Senate is an organization that any student interested in a leadership role may join. These students exude school spirit as they organize and decorate for school dances and pep rallies. In addition, the members have a heart for service as the group raises funds and food for various charities. This Senate is for independent thinkers that take pride in our school!

Theater members meet once or twice per week to develop their acting skills and prepare for the spring production. Student can be involved on stage as actors, or behind the scenes in stage crew, set design, props, or costuming.

The Yearbook provides design and production opportunities that enrich our school, community, and individuals. Students are responsible for all facets of producing the school yearbook including developing a theme, writing copy, selecting photographs, layout, and selling ads to businesses, and distributing books to the student body.
